Tax Questions

Wilkinsburg taxes include the Property Tax (the Borough rate is 14 mils, the School District rate is 24.5 mils and the County rate is 4.73 mils). To estimate the yearly taxes use the fair market value of a house you can use the Allegheny County web site at to search a property and find the fair market value. By multiplying each tax rate (i.e. Wilkinsburg Borough annual tax on a home with a fair market value at $50,000 x .014 would be approximately $700 to the Borough and $50,000 x .0295 for the School District would be approximately $1,475, County, add a zero, x .00473= approx. $236) you can estimate the total annual taxes. The party you are working with to purchase a property should provide you with actual tax bills from each taxing body. If you plan on investing significant amounts into a property there is a temporary tax  exemption program available to ensure a gradual increase if the property is reassessed due to improvements. Go to the Code Enforcement Department page under “forms” for the application and click here for the ordinance describing the 10-year temporary tax exemption program.

Additional taxes include Earned Income Tax (1%), Business Privilege/Mercantile Tax, and Local Services Tax ($52 per year, subject to income limits).

Wilkinsburg also levies an annual Municipal Service Fee of $200 to cover the costs of refuse and recycling collection. Water rates are established by the Wilkinsburg Penn Joint Water Authority and the sewer rates are established by Alcosan with approval of the Borough of Wilkinsburg Council – Both are collected by the Wilkinsburg Penn Joint Water Authority.

All of the assessment/taxes are collected by the assigned collector and NOT payable at the Borough Offices. Property Tax Collector (Berkheimer) does hold hours at the Borough Building for collection. Contact the Borough office for days and times at 412-244-2900.
