Tax Compromise

What is the Tax Compromise Program?

Wilkinsburg knows that many properties in our area have fallen years behind in tax payments. Whether Commercial or Residential, this historical burden stifles investment in the property to bring it into reuse and preventing future taxable value.

To ease these fears, spur renewal, and generally encourage regrowth, we offer a Tax Compromise Program for those who quality. This program will forgive some or all of the back taxes on property after the completion of significant renovation and reassessment of property.

How does the process work?

You submit your application – at least 90 days before the start of any work – and it comes before the Joint Tax Committee. Once approved, you can continue your work; on completion, the work is inspected and the new value is assessed. The historical taxes and liens are cleared, and the property is taxed as normal going forward.

Who can use this program?

Any person, organization, corporation, limited liability company, partnership or association – nearly any entity that can own property, so long as they are making significant capital improvements. You also need to be current on taxes and clear of code violations for all other properties you own.

Tax Abatement is best for properties underwater with historical back taxes who want to make improvements; if you are current on taxes and want to make significant improvements or new construction, consider the Tax Abatement Program.
