Borough of Wilkinsburg Relaunches Tax Abatement and Tax Compromise Programs to Spur Redevelopment

Wilkinsburg, PA – May 29, 2024 – The Borough of Wilkinsburg is excited to announce the relaunch of two key tax incentive programs designed to promote redevelopment and revitalization within the community: the Tax Abatement Program and the Tax Compromise Program. These programs are aimed at encouraging property owners and investors to renovate and reconstruct properties, enhancing the overall economic health and aesthetic appeal of Wilkinsburg.

Tax Abatement Program: This program offers property owners a ten-year graduated increase in taxable value following the renovation or reconstruction of their properties. The phased approach allows for substantial savings in the initial years, making it financially feasible for property owners to invest in significant improvements.

Tax Compromise Program: Under this initiative, property owners with outstanding back taxes can have these debts forgiven in exchange for committing to renovate their properties and agreeing to a new, fair market valuation. This program aims to reduce the burden of back taxes, enabling property owners to focus their resources on enhancing their properties and contributing to the borough’s growth.

“These programs offer great incentives to create and enhance the momentum here in Wilkinsburg,” said Mike McMullen, Member of Council and Chair of the Economic Development Committee. “We know that the right time to invest in Wilkinsburg’s explosive coming decade is right now, and these programs help our residents make the investments they need to get the most from their homes and businesses.”

Program Highlights:

Tax Abatement Program: For tax-current properties; offers a ten-year graduated tax increase on renovated or reconstructed properties, easing the financial burden on property owners during the critical initial years post-renovation.
Tax Compromise Program: Forgives back taxes for property owners who commit to renovation and agree to a new valuation, helping to clear financial obstacles and promote property improvements.

Both programs have been updated to better serve the needs of the community and align with current market conditions. Property owners and investors are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities to enhance their properties and contribute to the borough’s redevelopment efforts.

The Public is welcome at the Joint Tax Committee meetings, held on the 4th Monday of every month at the Wilkinsburg Borough Building (605 Ross Ave). Interested parties can learn more about the application process, eligibility criteria, and the benefits of participating in these programs.
